Iron Maiden Ed Phones-Get some Ed Ph0n3s on your Ed

Iron Maiden Ed Phones

Iron Maiden Ed-Phones or the cleverly named Ed-Ph0n3s are here after almost 2 years of research and development between Steve Harris & ONKYO Audio.

Collaborating between their technical consultant Mark Cheffins, together they have fine tuned the Ed-Phones to deliver the best possible sound quality for us Rock n Metal fans.

Founder member Steve has even used the very Ed-Phones to mix maiden’s latest offering and highly acclaimed album The Book Of Souls.

But, as you know, Maiden aren’t renowned for giving their fans inferior gear and we expect nothing less than quality for the £199 price tag, don’t we?

So let’s hear what Bass player Steve Says about Maiden Audio Ed- ph0n3s.

Maiden Japan

“I’ve thought about doing my own set of headphones 4 or 5 years ago, I’ve tested 40 or 50 types of headphones in different stores and all over the place. And I couldn’t really find a set of headphones that represented what I wanted to hear, not just for maiden music, but for rock music in general”.

After trying out Japanese manufacturers ONKYO headphones, he said, “they did have a few elements that other headphones didn’t have but weren’t exactly I was looking for”.

So enter Mark Cheffings, the middle man for audio company ONKYO who obligingly offered he could make them. He told Steve, “You design the sound and the characteristics and we’ll put them into production”.

Ear Of The Dark

“It’s really important to get the sounds across the spectrum, because a lot of headphones that are made these days are made mainly for dance type music, so you have a really high top end and a low end and the mid ranges are really lacking for rock and metal- so basically I wanted to create something that had all the sound spectrum”.

It was the vision that the Headphones be designed specifically for fans of rock and metal. A musical genre that demands clarity and presence in the mid-range.

Where Eargles Dare

With total involvement from Steve Harris, these headphones are balanced for clean highs and lows but also for the all important space in the mid-range to best display the dynamics and complexities of rock  and metal music.

Now he’s really pleased with the collaboration with Onkyo and the end result. After sorting out EQ’s back and forth, & Mark working between Steve and ONKYO, he admits it being frustrating at times “but we got there in the end”.

He believes they have made a superior product comparable to others, certainly in the price range. “I actually don’t think there’s anything out there with all those frequencies”.

If Hearing Should Fail

And now you can get Iron Maiden custom EQ settings from your phones and into your ‘Ed by way of the Maiden Audio App available for download in the Apple & Google Play store. It’s for those audiophiles out there that want to fully immerse themselves in the maiden audio experience.

Steve says, “We wanted to add something to the package, and it’s just a bit of fun looking at how the all the band differ slightly in what they prefer to hear”.

Preloaded EQs tuned by all six members of IRON MAIDEN (Bruce Dickinson, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, Steve Harris, Nicko McBrain) give you the sound of IRON MAIDEN as each member intends you to hear it.

What are they saying?

At last a set of headphones that can actually do what they claim to do! I’m hearing things in tracks that I’ve not picked up before.

Paul Anthony, Breakfast Show Presenter- Planet Rock Radio.

These are my best headphones I’ve ever owned. All my others are muddy in the bottom end and yet these sound brilliant even at low volume, I mean total clarity- just gorgeous.

Alex Milas, Editor In Chief- Metal Hammer Magazine.

The art work on the Ed Phones takes it’s style from Maiden’s futuristic Somewhere In Time as Eddie can be seen wearing a similar pair. Steve wanted to stick with this look, opting for a state of the art technical theme.

He understands that his loyal fans like to proudly wear maiden’s colours on their sleeves so he pushed for good artwork including the smoke printing on the arms which looks the business.

Steve concludes,

“It’s not a normal set of headphones with Eddie slapped on the top of it. Some people would just make something and slap their name on it, and that’s it. The sound is more important than the art work, But we’ve always had good artwork on everything we’ve done, but yes, I think it’s bloody good artwork anyway”.

Very cool website you have here. I enjoyed reading through your article. I am also a metal fan myself and can definitely appreciate your niche.

Nice breakdown of the headphones. There is enough information here to give readers a good idea of what the product is all about.

I like that you include comments from notable people in the industry too!

    Great read!

      Nice one Farhan

Yeah, the testimonials are from some well respected people in the biz who know what they’re talking about. I’m an avid reader of Metal Hammer Magazine and I always tune into Planet Rock Radio when I blog away. Those these 2 people (Alex & Paul) were a fitting critic for this post.

The Maiden Audio Ed Phones look great, and it’s not only the looks that get the thumbs up from me, it’s all about Steve’s commitment to excellence over a 2 year period of development.

& I’m sure you can appreciate being an Audio Engineer yourself, being in pursuit of perfection and critical to how music has to sound good when it meet your ears.

Just like to add, I really like your website, and you’re doing a great job posting informative content. Live Sound & Studio Recording is something I’ve sadly left behind, but I’m still keen and very interested in Music Production.

      Anyway…

I hope you don’t mind me throwing down a link should anyone be interested, they can visit your site below.

        to see what’s new!

All the best, and don’t give up on your passion just yet =)

  • Hannah says:

Wow! These are some of th coolest head sets I’ve ever seen! I’m not personally a big fan of Iron Maiden but my brother is and he would love these!
I might even get him a set some time.

One question: Are they comfortable to wear for longer periods of time? Some headphones can make your ears sore after you’ve had them on for a while.

    Great job on this review!

    • Pete says:

      Hey Hannah

      Thanks for being here today.

The Maiden Audio Ed phones are have nicely padded ear cups and behind sits Titanium drivers which are pretty lightweight. The Ed-Ph0n3s only weigh in at 245g so they shouldn’t feel a burden whilst listening.

Steve has used these himself for Mixing in the studio and this involves long periods of time with headphones clamped to ears, Having annoying pressure against your noggin would not sit well with the affable bass man.

They’re even used by Planet Rock Radio’s presenter, Paul Anthony, so I trust his judgement.

My post is not actually a review, it’s more of shout out to my favourite band and the love of all things metal.

Me personally have yet to get a set, it’s something I’m very keen to get my hands on, being an ex audio engineer and a full on maiden fan myself. Soon I will write a personal review post on Maiden Audio’s Ed- phones.

So thanks again Hannah, & by the way great site with the Pro Piercing kits, Love the Logo!

      All the very best

      Pete.

Awesome review. These look like some great headphones. I myself am really into the loud electronic bass drop stuff and by the way you described the product it got me really excited to do more research. Really like the site and it looks like you are passionate about rock music. Keep up the good work!

    • Pete says:

Thanks JP, for visiting RocknMetalCollectables just now.

The Iron Maiden Ed Phones look the business don’t they?

I’m totally in my element here and I love and look forward to posting more reviews.

      Thanks for the encouragement!

      Very best,

      Pete.
