When his peers and many of his fans banded together to play homage to the Rainbow/Dio/Sabbath legend, I knew it was one hell of a good idea.
Tipping their hats to the late great pint sized frontman, a cast of metal stars joined together to create a tribute album brimming full of classics.
And with all proceeds going to the Stand Up And Shout Cancer charity I just couldn’t help but get involved.
With a wealth of material covering Dio’s musical career by many of metal’s elder statesman, who wouldn’t want to get this readily in their collection?
Ronnie James Dio – This Is Your Life Features:
Biggest names in metal salute Ronnie’s Legacy with tribute covers.
- Anthrax’s superb cover of the Sabbath’s ‘Neon Knights’
- Metallica’s Ronnie Rising Medley. Including ‘Tarot Woman’, ‘Stargazer’ & ‘Kill The King’
- Killswitch Engage delve into the depths with ‘Holy Diver’
- Motorhead’s Lemmy & Biff Bifford of Saxon join up for ‘Starstruck’
- Rob Halford, Vinnie Appice & more collaborate for ‘Man On The Silver Mountain’
Corey Taylor sings magnificently, & I applaud Joey Belladonna too. I reckon their vocal styles have played an ace on Dio’s Material.- With hardly any grunts (except Killswitch’s Holy Diver) or throat rasping, thankfully, no one gets a ruptured spleen here.
Check out this Vid for further investigation.
With many familiar faces across the front cover, you can be rest assured its good company taking charge of the proceedings. Mentionables include members of: Metallica, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Scorpions, Slipknot, Tenacious D, Anthrax, Slipknot, Saxon, Steel Panther.
Who’s It’s For?
Traditional metal heads will cream themselves over this, with a mix of mostly 80’s and 90’s big stars priviledged to cover these metal classics. It’s everything I wanted. soaring vocals, classic riffs and subject matter to give lofty flights of imagination. Blimey!
Where To Find?
Hearing many of our cherished favourites play and sing, very finely indeed, along to some of Dio’s finest material. There’s no macho growls, grunts or screams to displease the faithful, & just knowing that your parted cash is winging its way to a charity fighting cancer is terrific.
Me, I’m not that keen on Tenacious D’s version of Last In line. It sounds a bit flat sandwhiched between Anthrax’s Neon knights and Adrenaline Mob’s The Mob Rules, or indeed that Jethro tull style flute solo, but that’s just me nit- picking.
And where was anyone’s cover of Heaven & Hell? Just to hear Ronnie’s superlative lyrics.
They say that life’s a carousel
Spinning fast, you’ve got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It’s Heaven and Hell, oh well
Oh well indeed!

There are some things that simply cannot be ignored, and that’s just how much Ronnie contributed to metal music it is today. Those iconic metal horns you throw aloft at shows?, that’s Ronnie’s idea gone global.
Inventing fantasy power metal with dungeons & dragons art/lyrical concepts, to taking over amazing vocal duties in the worlds first heavy metal band. I’d say that’s a fair body of work he left to the metal community, wouldn’t you agree? Long Live Ronnies Remarkble Legacy!
This Is Your Life celebrates one of the greatest voices in rock history. And if you were to add the album to your collection you’ll be doing a very noble and charitable pledge to the Stand Up & Shout Cancer Charity.
There’s not a bad track here, except for me, Tenacious D’s slightly disappointing Last In Line, but that’s easily forgiven in light of an excellent & faithful tribute to one of heavy metal’s timeless characters. We’ll surely miss you Ronnie.
So remember, next time you ‘Stand Up And Shout’, metal horns aloft at ‘Rainbows In The Dark’, it’s the spirit of Dio. Enjoy!
